Actually the suggestion about the servertasks may be right.
I noticed last week that my update and compact tasks were overlapping in time. Eventhough they don't start at the same time the update task didn't finish before the compact task started. I moved the compact task back a few hours and since then the server hasn't "stopped responding". I guess the real test is to put the compact task back and see if it will do the same thing again. I might just do that (weekends only, is it a production server), and check the result.
